1. Changes in the South Association: Hand in Hand for Uganda Ltd., Uganda

a) In order to make the Association in Uganda more “fit for future”, the local board will be enlarged by four more members. Four young people within the project who have completed their training have agreed to do so. An official entry in the "Association´s registry" is to be made soon.

b) The management of the Association, which has so far been managed solely by Betty Nakajigo, will be expanded by Paul Kimbugwe taking on the role of an assistant.

2. Further training

A computer course was very well received by selected young people and children from the project. This was offered professionally and free of charge by an acquainted computer specialist. The three-day course for a total of 11 participants took place in the orphanage.

3. Agricultural restructuring

Due to comprehensive additional training of the responsible farmer, the project's own agriculture was transformed step by step: e.g.:

1. artificial fertilizers and pesticides have been replaced by in-house production of organic compost and fertilizer

2. resource-saving water management; terracing and shading and

3. environmentally friendly, species-appropriate animal husbandry

4. Cultivation of coffee and other plants

4. Construction measures

a) Due to public road construction measures, the water drainage system built by the Association outside the orphanage's property was completely destroyed. Since the terrain there is very sloping, it was used to secure the wall during heavy rainfall so that it would not be washed out or damaged. Public compensation was rejected and the renewal had to be carried out through Association funds.

b) The wall on the inside of the new well was also plastered to make it rainproof and provided with additional drainpipes.

5. Lightning strike - a major financial challenge

Despite the presence of lightning rods, almost all solar panels and the storage batteries of the orphanage were destroyed in September. Public electricity also comes only sporadically during the day, not at all at night.

This situation has a significant impact on life. Above all, the children cannot do homework or study in the evening, school clothes cannot be ironed, or phones cannot be charged.

The board is working hard to find sponsors to cover the costs of approx. 3,600 euros for repairs and replacements.

6. Situation in the orphanage in Nkoni

Of the 93 children currently cared for, 64 go to school or are in an apprenticeship. The cramped space conditions make it necessary for two to three children to sleep in a loft bed on one of the three floors. Nevertheless, all children are happy about the good nutrition and feel comfortable in their "family".

Kind regards
Renate and team
