News about school, home, children, and other things in March 2023

Fortunately, the corona and Ebola viruses have calmed down in Uganda. Everyday life is gradually returning. However, there is a lot of catching up to do. In some cases, people have lost a lot. Small businesses are slowly being ramped up again, fields are being cultivated and schools are operational again.
Poverty in rural areas remains high and many people are unable to feed themselves properly. Visits to the doctor or preventive health care are prohibitively expensive.
Insights into the projects
1. Agriculture
Richard Ssekajigo, who is responsible for agricultural projects, has started the implementation of the restructuring of agriculture on the HiH property. Pig breeding is gradually being scaled back. Instead of the pigsty, a cowshed is to be built. In a first small step, the material is reused as far as possible, so that only low costs are incurred.
A small piece of arable land was purchased on which the grass for the cows is to be grown.
Mr. Joachim Kubitz will again apply for financial support to the Schmitz Foundation in order to be able to put the project on a solid footing. Plans include the extension of the barn, a shed for agricultural equipment and animal feed, and a piece of land adjacent to the property where the animals can run free.
2. Ultrasound machine
The "odyssey" of sending an ultrasound device donated by a doctor from Munich in January 2022 has now been completed after more than a year.
A young doctor who conducts the weekly medical consultation in the HiH project has expressed great interest in the device and would like to use it in his small clinic in Masaka. The patients from the project would also benefit from this.
At first, there were again and again difficulties with the contracted forwarding company, whose logistical ideas deviated more and more from the original agreements and the agreed price finally doubled because the packaging material was just as heavy as the device itself (i.e. then twice 100 kg!). The device had to be retrieved from the basement of a single-family home in Munich.
After even consulting a lawyer, the device finally, after a considerable amount of time but well packed, arrived at Munich Airport.
The arrival in Entebbe – Uganda then took place in OCTOBER 2022! After the requirements of customs were completed, which again took time and money, it was released on December 15th.
It was also not easy to transport the large, heavy device to the site in Masaka, where it arrived safely as a Christmas present on 24th of December.
Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Walter for the donation and the help.
3. Audit
For the first time, a professional document and accounting audit for the completed year 2022 was held in the Südverein (Southern Asscociation). In February 2023, the company "Evlo & Company" presented a comprehensive and complete report. Ms. Nakajigo had to dedicate a lot of time to this.
So much for today.
We wish you a nice and exciting spring and close with
Best regards and a big THANK YOU
Yours, Renate Blank and Thomas Langsch
